What is the difference between fewer and less?

Fewer refers to the number of separate, countable units. Less refers to bulk quantity.
  • We have less literature and fewer selections in this year’s curriculum.
Extra Examples:
  • At least for the present, the fewer people who knew, the better.
  • In 2000, Africa had fewer than five million Internet users.
  • We can make better food that uses fewer resources.
  • One little girl had fewer presents than the rest, and Helen insisted on sharing her gifts with her.
  • But it is quite likely you will need fewer workers.

  • Go find a less annoying way to earn some money.
  • Now the world has one less fool!
  • Finding the most effective sources remained less than satisfactory.
  • The Gargoyles were very small of stature, being less than three feet in height.
